Day 82
Freeport to Bar Harbor, Maine
Miles: 154.87 – Total accent: 7,513 – Hours: 4 hours, 13 minutes
Totals:. Miles- 4,752.57 – Accent- 150,548
359 hrs 35 minutes in the saddle
Although Sunday was our last day on the bike, we continue to use the Garmin each day. It records the roads we’ve traveled. We’ve also learned each app records mileage and elevation differently.
The Marine Maritime Museum is along the way so we stop and learn SO much!! The art and skill of shipbuilding is fascinating.
The weather is unusually beautiful. Clear skies, a light breeze, low humidity with temps in the 70’s. Boy, wouldn’t it be great to be able to bottle this and take it home?!
We continue to get updates on the weather back home. Mud flows, washed out roads, the I-10 closed and multi-car pileups. It is a bit of a helpless feeling. Knowing that everyone is doing their best there to preserve their properties and help their loved ones, we resolve that we’ll deal with any issues when we return. Thank goodness we had broken and slipped roof tiles corrected earlier this year!!

The Penobscot Narrows Observatory & Fort Knox Historic Site

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory is the crown jewel of coastal Maine, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the Penobscot River and Bay, the Maine countryside and the distant western mountains. Tourists and travel writers alike have been attracted to the unique character of this structure, its historical significance and the stunning vistas. Engineering and transportation geeks are fascinated by the award-winning and innovative design. Visitors of all ages and interests will enjoy this unique campus that includes: The tallest public bridge observatory in the world; Historic Fort Knox; Picnic tables and grills; A diversity of interpretive panels explaining the history of the region, natural wildlife of the area and more; A covered pavilion for hosting family reunions, small weddings and other special events; as well as Perfect backdrops for your vacation or family photos.

Having packed last night, we discovered we need a second suitcase so a quick stop at the Rockport Goodwill yields another cheap suitcase that will get us home.
A cabin in the woods in Bar Harbor will be our home for the night. We check in at the KOA and head for downtown Bar Harbor. What fun! As with most tourist destinations, there are lots of shops fill with souvenirs. We have fun reading the towels and shirts with clever sayings and the people watching is over the top!!
We catch dinner at the Dog and Pony where Gail, a local, shares lots of insight into the area. And yes. I had fish and chips again!! Drew’s lobster Mac and cheese had huge chunks of lobster meat. It was a meal fit for a king!
We’ll come back tomorrow morning to do a little more exploring and have breakfast at Jordan’s.
Back at camp, we spend the night in the comfort of our down quilts…. They have warmed us, soothed us, held us over the past few months over several states through all kinds of weather. There’s something special about an item of comfort and familiarity, especially when so many other things are constantly changing.
We spent the evening laughing, recounting memories from the past months, feeling grateful for amazing experiences and meeting such wonderful people and for the opportunity to see this beautiful country from the seat of a bike. Our lives have been so enriched and will never be the same.
